The town of Chitina, once a thriving transportation hub for activity at the nearby Kennicott Copper Mine, became a virtual ghost town after the mine closed in 1938. Today it's a popular summertime destination for Alaska residents who take advantage of a subsistence harvest for red salmon in the Copper River.
