Rich Collins, a UAF Geophysical Institute professor of Atmospheric Science, stands outside the Lidar control room at Poker Flat Research Range. Collins is the lead investigator in a research project aimed at measuring effects of turbulence in the upper atmosphere. The light coming from the building behind him can measure temperatures 50 miles into the sky.
