Associate professor Margaret Darrow pauses as she hikes down one of a series of frozen debris lobes which have appeared along the Dietrich River valley in the southern Brooks Range about 225 miles north of Fairbanks. Darrow and a team of state geologists are investigating ways to slow down or step the movement of the lobes, which could threaten the Dalton Highway and the nearby trans-Alaska pipeline.
